Bishop Theodore Jenkins, Sr.
pastors the Progressive Church in Lugoff, SC. He is the eldest of ten
children born to Mrs. Sarah Gold Jenkins and the late Mr. Simon Jenkins.
He was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ at the Progressive Church in
Columbia, SC in the late 1950's
Bishop Jenkins graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in
1966. After graduating, he
served in the United States
Army for two years during the Vietnam Conflict.
While serving in Vietnam, he received thirteen honorary medals,
including the three Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Gold Star , the Air Medal
and the Purple Heart. Upon
his return home, he resumed his studies at the University of South
Carolina and Midlands Technical College where he received his degree in
Engineering Technology.
Bishop Jenkins is very active in community and church projects.
He was named to Who’s Who in American Religion and was a
recipient of the Save Our Community Award. In 1967, he was called into the ministry and was licensed as a
minister.
During the 30th Annual Holy Convocation in 1974, he was ordained as an
elder. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed to serve as assistant pastor
of the Headquarters Church in Columbia, SC by the late Presiding Bishop
Joel G. Washington, Sr. He was later appointed pastor of the
Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Lugoff, South Carolina.
Bishop Jenkins
served as Vice-chair of the Board of Presbytery from 1983 to 1988. In 1988, he was
appointed to serve as Vice-chairman of the Advisory Council of
the Progressive Churches of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc., and later
serves as Chairman. On July 2, 2007 he was consecrated
as a Bishop and appointed to serve as a member of the Board of Bishops
of the Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Bishop Jenkins is happily married to Gail Wheeler
Jenkins. They are the proud
parents of three children, Leah (Ronald) Scott, Theodore Jenkins Jr., and
Christopher Jenkins. They also have three grandsons, Ronald T. C. Scott, Joseph A. B. Scott,
and Preston S. J. Scott.
